Long gone are the days of the euphoria that followed the dismantling of the Soviet Union, Ah, the Project for the New American Century (PNAC). Full-spectrum domination. Pax americana imposed manu militari.
So euphoric were they in their hysterical triumphalism that they thought it was historic. Even the least aggressive of them, Fukuyama, thought he could close history, like closing a pub, not just for a while but forever:
- We don't sell history any more, that article is sold out and nobody else trades it!
It seemed easy: no rivals on the horizon. Russia was busy licking its wounds, China had that absorbing hobby it still has today: getting rich without rattling the coins in its purse.
The neo-cons didn't just think they had the world at their feet: they thought they had it UNDER their feet. Not even regional powers would be allowed: wherever you went, if you stuck your head above the grave, you'd get beaten up.
Oh, what could go wrong? they might not have been very clever, but they didn't need to be: they trusted their clever weapons. In the words of John Le Carré, they had missiles capable of swatting a fly from the other side of the hemisphere.
Well, there was 'collateral damage', but who cared? Here and there a missile would hit a market, a hospital or even the Chinese embassy (Belgrade, remember?).
Nobody would retaliate, the other countries only had 'stupid' missiles, and they had the 'Patriots' to shoot them down in mid-flight. Not even the sky was the limit.
To the delight of the American supremacists, CNN shamelessly broadcast 'live' the bombings of Baghdad and later Belgrade. It was revolting for many people? so what? what were they going to do? demonstrate? write articles in the newspapers? pfff, losers do what they do best: waste their time.
Overconfidence was fatal: never have so few people fucked up so much and in so little time what was already taken for granted and inevitable.
Today they are old and as decadent as the Empire. But that doesn't mean they want peace and quiet. They've lived and grown up with wars, they've promoted them like no-one else. They don't know how to do anything else in the short time they have left to live.
I'd like them to live long enough to at least see the ruin of all their illusions.

A Pax americana imposta manu militari.
Parecia fácil: nenhum rival no horizonte.
