The 4th Reich?

No kidding?

In the Portuguese language we have a popular saying that states that there are no two (times) without three. Merz goes further and says: there are no three attempts without a fourth. The fact that the three previous Reichs were a disgrace for Germany (the third was the worst and the second was also much more tragic than the first) certainly does not influence his delusions.

It is easy to understand how certain habits are created when they produce positive consequences. Let's say that in these cases, people get more used to the results than the process. But what about those who persist in repeating what went wrong? Einstein elaborated on this, I believe.

Which brings us back to Merz’s never-confessed-but-recently-exposed habits. However, it would be reductive to think that the chancellor is betting on the remilitarization of Germany out of pure nasal inspiration.

I think in his case, the idea may have been absorbed along with his mother's milk, considering his recent ancestry. His company and ‘incentives’, of course, were decisive, mothers are never to blame for their children’s bad decisions in adulthood.

So, the Chancellor tells us, Germany is ready to assume its responsibilities as the most populous and most powerful country in Europe. Dejà vue and dejà ecouté, right? but he says more: the other European countries not only ask but also DEMAND that Germany do so. What to say about this? Well, at least his predecessor (the one from the 3rd Reich) did not accept foreign demands, he said what he said and did what he did always in the name of Germany, he never hid under the skirts of Europe.

But the most serious problem with these bold statements is this: how does Chancellor Merz know what the European people want or demand? Does he have a crystal ball? read in the entrails of birds or in tea leaves?

Strictly speaking, he doesn't even know what his people want, or if he does, he doesn't care about it, or wasn't he the one who imported more immigrants after having promised during his campaign that he would restrict emigration?

In any case, perhaps it doesn't matter much what he says because the young Germans (those he wants to mobilize for his new Crusade) don't care about his appeals and run away from the army like the Devil is said to have run away from the Cross.

Marketing geniuses may well turn their heads to seduce the unwary, but the truth is that if the Army was ever seen as something fun, it was in times of peace (how could it not be? radical sports, the opportunity to travel and meet girls or boys from other countries and oh...the uniform, which always looks so good as long as it's not dirty with mud and blood).

In times of war, however (even if only ‘threatened’, for now), military fascination diminishes even more than the desire to light bonfires in the desert or eat ice cream at the North Pole.

It's a mania that humans have, this thing of thinking that they don't need bullets in their bodies, mines exploding under their genitals, or a missile falling into their soup, nothing to do about it. So human than that is only the universal need to eat, breathe and drink.

Of course, there are always crazy people everywhere, not just in the chancellor's place. But in wars, these, by a well-known law of Darwin, tend towards extinction because the probability of surviving a war is inversely proportional to the proximity to the front line. This is also why, in fact, the joke is told:

80% of Ukrainians support the continuation of the war. The other 20% - those who want peace - live in Ukraine. Germany currently has one foot in the war and the other out of it. A chancellor who takes his foot off Ukraine and does not frighten his citizens with short-term wars might, perhaps, be able to attract his youth to the army again.

But - you readers will legitimately ask - what if military service is mandatory? Well, in that case, in a Europe without borders (Schengen area, remember?) I believe that young Germans will do what the Ukrainians did: leave their country quickly and in a massive way.

Just in case, we should prepare to welcome some of them to Portugal, with the certainty that they would not give us the concerns we already have with some other immigrants, Ukrainians included.

O 4º Reich?

Na língua portuguesa temos um dito popular que afirma que não há duas (vezes) sem três. Merz vai mais longe e diz: não há três tentativas sem uma quarta. O facto de os três Reichs anteriores terem sido uma desgraça para a Alemanha ( o terceiro foi o pior e o segundo foi também bem mais trágico que o primeiro) não influencia, certamente, os seus delírios.

É fácil entendermos como certos hábitos se criam quando eles produzem consequências positivas. Digamos que nesses casos, as pessoas se habituam mais aos resultados do que ao processo. Mas que dizer de quem persiste em repetir o que correu mal? Einstein elaborou sobre isso, creio.

O que nos leva de volta aos nunca confessados mas recentemente expostos hábitos de Merz. No entanto, seria redutor pensar que o chanceler aposta na remilitarização da Alemanha por pura inspiração nasal.

Penso que no caso dele, a ideia pode ter sido absorvida juntamente com o leite materno, considerando sua ascendência recente. As suas companhias e seus ‘incentivos’, é claro, forma decisivos, as mães nunca são culpadas das más decisões de seus filhos em idade adulta.

Então, diz-nos o chanceler, a Alemanha está pronta a assumir suas responsabilidades como o mais populoso e o mais poderoso país da Europa. Dejà vue e dejà ecouté, não? mas ele diz mais: os outros países europeus não só pedem como também EXIGEM que a Alemanha o faça. Que dizer sobre isso? bom, que pelo menos seu antecessor (o do 3º Reich) não aceitava exigências estrangeiras, disse o que disse e fez o que fez sempre em nome da Alemanha, nunca se escondeu sob as saias da Europa.

Mas o problema mais grave destas ousadas declarações é este: como sabe o chanceler Merz o que os povos europeus querem ou exigem? ele tem uma bola de cristal? leu nas entranhas das aves ou nas folhas do chá?

A bem dizer ele nem sequer sabe o que seu povo quer, ou se sabe, não se importa com isso, ou não foi ele mesmo que importou paletes de imigrantes depois de ter prometido em campanha que restringiria a emigração?

De qualquer forma, talvez não importe muito o que ele diga porque os jovens alemães (aqueles que ele quer mobilizar para sua nova Cruzada) não estão nem aí para seus apelos e fogem do exército como se diz que o Diabo fugia da Cruz.

Os génios marketeiros bem podem dar a volta à cabeça para seduzir os incautos mas a verdade é que se o Exército já foi encarado como coisa divertida, isso aconteceu em tempos de paz (como não? desportos radicais, oportunidade para viajar e conhecer garotas ou garotos de outros países e ah…o uniforme, que fica sempre tão bem enquanto não está sujo de lama e de sangue).

Em tempos de guerra porém (mesmo que só ‘ameaçada’, por enquanto), o fascínio militar decresce ainda mais do que a vontade de acender fogueiras no deserto ou comer gelados no pólo Norte.

É uma mania que os humanos têm, essa de acharem que não precisam de balas no corpo, de minas explodindo sob seus genitais, ou de um míssil caindo na sua sopa, nada a fazer. Mais humano que isto só mesmo a necessidade universal de comer, respirar e beber.

Claro, há sempre malucos em todo o lado, não só no lugar de chanceler. Mas nas guerras esses, por uma conhecida lei de Darwin, tendem para a extinção porque a probabilidade de sobreviver a uma guerra é inversamente proporcional à proximidade relativamente à linha da frente. Também é por isso, aliás, que se conta aquela anedota que diz:

80% dos ucranianos defendem a continuação da guerra. Os outros 20% - os que querem a paz - vivem na Ucrânia. A Alemanha por enquanto está com um pé na guerra, outro fora dela. Um chanceler que retire o seu pé da Ucrânia e não assuste seus cidadãos com guerras a curto prazo talvez, talvez, possa de novo atrair seus jovens para o Exército.

Mas- perguntarão vocês leitores, legitimamente - e se o Serviço militar for obrigatório? bom, nesse caso, numa Europa sem fronteiras (espaço Schengen, lembram-se?) acredito que os jovens alemães farão o que os ucranianos fizeram: saírem de seu país rapidamente e em força.

Pelo sim pelo não, devíamos preparar-nos para acolher alguns deles em Portugal, com a certeza que esses não nos dariam as preocupações que já temos com alguns imigrantes, ucranianos incluídos.
